Sciots 2023 Summer Calendar, Roster and Info

  • The season is about to begin. Attached is the summer calendar and rosters (alphabetical and by cabin # order). Teaser, we have a new activity this season, you’ll have to check out the calendar. There’s plenty of opportunities to volunteer, the more of us that get involved, the better time we’ll have. It’s a great way to meet a friend.
  • This is an Election year, I attached the bylaws and constitution. More information at the meeting.
  • Chlorination of the water system will be happening soon.
  • We had more than our share of snow. The river and creek are running remarkably high, fast, and cold, be sure to keep children and pets from the rushing water.
  • Bear activity – the bears are back, be aware and careful. DON’T LEAVE ANY FOOD OR GARBAGE OUTSIDE OR INSIGHT.
  • ICE CREAM. Despite inflation and the increase in the Consumer Price Index, ice cream will remain at .50¢ a scoop. The Ice cream store will open at 6:30 – 8:30pm every Saturday and Sunday’s on Holiday Weekends thru Labor Day. Note, evenings of potlucks, opening time may be delayed to give scoopers a chance to eat.  Please go to the website to sign up to serve. Working the store 2 shifts will fulfill your Cabin’s yearly Community Service Hours.
  • WORKDAY – We have two workday’s scheduled, June 10th and September 16th. Every cabin owner is responsible for participating in a workday or donating four hours per season to better Camp. Be sure to sign in when doing your workday. It doesn’t have to be the cabin owner; it can be a representative for the cabin. If you’re unable to make either of these dates, please contact Vice President, Don Foster at 530-400-1321 or dtfoster@dcn.org. The workday needs to be completed on or before the last workday of the season, September 16th.
  • Be Sure to check out the website and our Facebook page.

Memorial Day Agenda

Greeting Cabin Owners,

Attached is the DRAFT agenda for Saturday’s Cabin Owner’s Meeting which is scheduled for 5:00PM in the Clubhouse. A potluck dinner is to follow the meeting and the opening of the ice cream store.
The Executive Board is meeting in the Clubhouse at 1:30PM to discuss the general conditions of Camp and the season ahead. You’re always welcome to join us. This presents a great opportunity for you to get involved and to know what it takes to keep Camp cohesive and enjoyable for all.
The snow on the roads have melted making all Cabins assessable. Please be mindful when turning on your water for the first time this season. Several cabin owners have reported leaks.
We look forward to seeing you

PS: Please go out to Sciotscamp.org to sign up to serve ice. We need scoopers this Saturday and Sunday.

Bears in camp

A bear has broken into one of the cabins in camp. Cabin owners were not there and have been notified. Please be sure to close blinds/curtains/shutters when leaving your cabin. A momma bear and two cubs have been seen in Strawberry Tract and one of their cabins have also had a bear break-in. We don’t know if it’s the same bear that was seen in our camp. They’re roaming around looking for food.

Below is a link regarding bears.

As always if leaving for more than a few days, turn off your water.

Restricted Use Permit

Hi Tract Contact Vicki Aston, please forward this email to members of your Tract.

Permit
Health and Safety

Hello Sciots Recreation Residence Tract,

Because the Eldorado National Forest is still under a Forest Wide Closure Order 03-21-14  those going to their cabin on Eldorado National Forest lands must carry a validated Restricted Use Permit (FS-7700-48) with them.  Another closure order specific to the Caldor Fire is expected to follow the current forest wide closure.

The Restricted Use Permit (FS-7700-48) attached to this email as a pdf document allows daytime only access to your cabin/lot starting today until October 31, 2021 for the purpose to assess for damage, winterize water systems, secure your cabin, and complete previously approved maintenance.

The Restricted Use Permit (FS-7700-48) must be validated   before going to your cabin.  Here’s how:

  • Print a paper copy of the Restricted Use Permit (FS-7700-48)
  • Read it, including the Re-entry Health and Safety Information sheet from El Dorado County Environmental Management.
  • On the top line of page 3 of the FS-7700-48, add the permit holder’s name and lot number.
  • Have the Recreation Residence Permit Holder add their signature and date to validate the permit.

If someone needs to go to your cabin (insurance adjuster, contractors, family members or friends) and the Recreation Residence Permit Holder will not be with them, give them a copy of the validated (signed and dated) Restricted Use Permit (FS-7700-48) with a note signed by the Recreation Residence Permit Holder naming the individual(s) who have permission to be at their lot and what you have authorized them to do. Be sure to share the safety information in this email and on the FS-7700-48 permit.

The Restricted Use Permit (FS-7700-48) is not an approval for repairs.  Repairs approved in writing by the Forest Service prior to the Caldor Fire can continue.  Refer to your operation & maintenance plan (part of your special use permit) for the procedure for repairs and maintenance for your lot and cabin.  Written approval is required prior to maintenance and repairs.  Please restrict maintenance/repair requests and proposals to emergency needs only at this time.

Watch out for utility workers felling hazard trees, replacing electrical lines/poles, heavy equipment activity and other dangerous situations. Be aware there may be delays getting to your cabin.  You may even need to come back later or on another day, depending on the situation. Let any workers in your Tract know you are there.  Less people in the Forest on our narrow tract roads will help utility workers and firefighters get everything done more quickly and safely—replacing power lines, cutting hazard trees, restoration of dozer lines and fire lines. The best way to help is to stay away from the Forest as much as you can.

Be sure to thank your Tract Contact(s) and provide them with your current email address if you didn’t receive this directly from them

Email from Nancy Plat (USFS)

Dear Permit Holders:

We hope that you and yours are staying safe and healthy during this challenging and stressful time. Like some of you, many Eldorado National Forest and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit employees are evacuated from our homes and/or offices. We are working on Caldor Fire tasks and continue to work on regular forest business as much as possible.

As of today there are approximately 4,000 firefighters still working to suppress this fire throughout El Dorado, Amador, and Alpine Counties.  They have done an admirable job of protecting residences and businesses in the face of severe conditions.  We realize that some of you may have lost cabins or other structures authorized under permit, and we will work with you as the full picture of the fire impacts are known.

There is no definite ending date for the current evacuation orders and the closure order for Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and other national forests in California is in place until at least September 17, with the Eldorado National Forest closure extending until at least September 30.  We will keep you informed about any changes to the forest closures. We encourage you to check the following web sites to monitor the progress on the fire suppression efforts, as well as other changes in the status of evacuations and closures:

In regard to specific questions about your cabin, please contact your special use permit administrator, Nancy Platt at 530-647-5354 or nancy.platt@usda.gov for the Placerville Ranger District cabins along Highway 50, including Atwood Tract at Echo Summit (near the intersection of Johnson Pass Road) to Bull Creek Tract near Riverton (Intersection of Ice House Road).

This past several weeks have added stresses to those of the past year-and-a-half.  Our thoughts are with you and your family and we look forward to the time when we can all return to our National Forest lands and communities.   Together, we will move forward with increased appreciation for our shared stewardship in managing these lands we all care about so much.

Sciots update

Sciots Family,

We know you all are closely watching the events unfold around Camp during the Caldor Fire. At the time of drafting this email, Camp is safe and is being protected by Cal Fire and US Forest Service crews. However mandatory evacuations have been issued from Echo Summit to Christmas Valley.

The executive board held a virtual discussion on what to do about the remainder of the year’s events and the elections. This is what was decided:

Labor Day and the Centennial activities have been canceled.

Executive Board elections will be by mail in ballot. Cabin owners who receive correspondence via email will receive an electronic ballot and those who receive US Mail correspondence will receive a paper ballot with a self-addressed envelope from the election committee, Tony Wirt and Robert Carisoza. You’ll be requested to reply electronically and mail in the paper ballot by a given due date. There will be one vote per cabin.

The 2nd Workday has been postponed until we can get into Camp to evaluate its condition.

The water will not be chlorinated for the remainder of the year.

The Laundry room will remain open until concerns of the pipes freezing.

Like you, we’ve been following several forms of media to track the Caldor Fire and Camp’s condition. We’re holding our breath and crossing our fingers that the clean-up work that was done during the Spring and during the workday, will pay dividends by assisting the Fire service agencies help keep Camp safe.

We’ve found one good source of info if you follow on Twitter, craig philpott @CphilpottCraig

He has been in camp a couple of time this past week. These pictures were taken earlier today.

Keep the Faith….

Caldor Fire

Several of you have been asking for updates about the Caldor Fire. We’ve been watching the news outlets and viewing Cal Fire https://www.fire.ca.gov/ and the US El Dorado National Forest Service https://www.fs.usda.gov/eldorado/ websites for information.
Kathy Lewin has been in touch with Nancy Platt. According to Nancy, shut down of the El Dorado Forest is eminent to allow for safe travel of fire crews being dispatched to fight the fire. This means that this weekend’s potluck and The History of Sciots will be postponed until further notice.

Attached are a couple pictures that Don Foster and Jackie Miner took today in Camp. Both reported that ash is raining down and the air quality is very poor.

We’ll update you with more information as it is received. Please keep our cabin owners in your thoughts who live in the Pollock Pines and Sly Park areas.

Sciots January Update

We hope you are doing well. We thought we’d give you a little Sciots Camp update. In case you haven’t checked, the webcam has been out of service since the last power outage and was reset Sunday. You may want to check it out soon, there’s a major storm warning in effect beginning tonight through next Tuesday. We’re not sure how long there will be power.

1/30/2021 8:30 AM

The last storm blew over several trees in Camp causing at least one water leak at the top of Hernia Heights. Pete Southworth assessed all cabins and saw no apparent damage. Thanks Pete! We’ll have plenty of clean up and several water leaks to repair when this season begins. We hope you and your family is well and healthy.
