Water Leaks

The water leaks have been fixed. Everyone should have water now. You may experience some air coming out of the faucet first.BIG THANKS! To all the people that helped. Note, workers were attempting to keep social distancing.

Green Waste Dumpster

As the secretary:

Have you ever wondered what happens to the items that are put in the green waste dumpster that are NOT green waste? They must be removed prior to the dumpster being hauled away. This means someone must get into the dumpster, pull the items out and haul them away themselves. This has occurred multiple times. If you’re the cabin owner and someone is using your cabin, it’s your responsibility to inform your quest to what is happening in camp. The picture below it what was removed this time. Please be respectful to others in camp and only put green waste in the green waste dumpster.

As the cabin owner that had to remove the items and haul them out of camp in my car:

Looking at the trash and stuff I have a good idea who the person(s) are that used the green waste dumpster for their trash. I won’t blame anyone, but I’m not so happy handling others trash.

Water and Green Waste Dumpster

Water – Work on the water system on Wednesday, June 10th. Cabins 106-112 currently have their water shut off. Please contact Pete if you need water before Wednesday. Other cabins may experience their water being turned off/on throughout Wednesday. We welcome volunteers to help fix a couple water leaks.

Dumpster – The last dumpster in camp will be removed on Wednesday, June 10th. Currently we do not have plans for another dumpster.

We’re looking for a used android smart phone (if the screen is cracked, might be useable), no service contract is needed. We’re going see if we can use it for the camp’s webcam. If you have one you would like to donate to the tract, please let me know. It’s a new season, please be sure to get you burn permit. Burn Permit Info – EI Dorado County Fire District

2020 Summer Season – Covid-19

Greetings Sciots Camp Cabin Owners,

I hope that you and your family are safe and well. On Saturday May 9, the Executive Board held a Zoom conference call to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to Camp.

The Executive Board decided unanimously to follow the State of California’s executive order and comply with our Forest Service’s special use permit by canceling all events thru July 31st (meeting notes are attached). We will asses the remainder of the season as restrictions are lifted.

Unfortunately, this means no Memorial Day Weekend Cabin Owner’s Meeting, the morning biscuit and gravy breakfast and the opening of the Ice Cream Store. The cancellation also includes the Adult and Kid’s Workday’s, the 4th of July BBQ and 20th Anniversary of the Kids Olympics and the July 18th Sierra Wildlife Rescue Meeting. The Clubhouse, Playground and Restroom will also remain closed.

The operating budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year will require your approval. We are still discussing how we will do this. Stay tuned for details.

The Executive Board has decided to chlorinate and maintain the water system and open the laundry room throughout the season because we know you’ll want to check on your cabin. We’ve learned that the Forest Service will not enforce you to maintain the 30′ debris perimeter around your cabin however we know you’ll still want to. We’ll be providing a green waste only dumpster for a month beginning May 22nd. We ask that you do not over fill the dumpster above the sides and wait until it is emptied and returned.

We will be collecting the annual Association dues of $300 to maintain the roads, utilities, insurance and water system. This will also allow the Association to continue to collect reserve funds to build a new water chlorination and monitoring system facility at the water plant.

In closing, these are unprecedented times and we hope you understand that the decisions the Executive Board made were not easy and we cannot wait until we can enjoy each others company again.

Doug

Sciots Tract information

As planned our water is no longer being chlorinated.
Reminder:
Put a long stake by your outside main so it can be found in the snow. If there’s water problems any help we can do for the people searching for the issue is helpful.
Double check your cabin mains. It’s appreciated if we all check and double check our own cabin water mains.
Keep the vehicle gates closed and locked from now until Spring. The majority of the break-ins happen in the Fall and Winter months. The combination is the year Kit Carson passed through the area, 1844.

More Bear information

We are working with the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is imperative that all cabin owners go above and beyond to make sure no attractants are left in vehicles or around cabins. We are in the middle of the forest, their natural bear habitat.  It only takes one complacent person to begin a cycle of bad bear behavior. We all need to work together. They no longer re-locate bears, they trap and kill them. Hibernation season is upon us, they would like us to give the bear a chance to go into hibernation before proceeding with the last resort of trapping and killing the bear.  It is very uncommon for a bear not to hibernate. If a bear has food available, he may not go completely into hibernation.  A bear’s metabolism will slow down but is very uncommon to see bear up and moving in the middle of winter.

When closing for the winter, do not leave ANY food in their cabins; including spices or canned goods.  Be sure to board up any crawl spaces to your cabin, you can also board windows from the inside.  Bears will tear off outside shutters and if they can visually see inside they may break windows to enter, especially if they have received a food reward from doing that in the past.  If you’re setting mousetraps, make sure you’re baiting with a substance that doesn’t attract bears.

Here are some more suggestions:
Additional precautions and deterrents include:

Secure garbage in a garage or shed, purchase bear proof cans
Clean garbage cans regularly with bleach
Pour bleach or ammonia over garbage before closing the bag
             Double bag trash
Freeze particularly smelly foods (bones, bacon grease, banana peels, egg shells, etc.).
             Rinse out recyclables
             Bring in scented candles
Don’t feed pets outside or store pet food outside
Take down bird feeders/ hummingbird feeders
Chest freezers should be moved into houses/ garages
Clean barbecue grills and store in a garage or shed
Put ammonia-soaked rags in punctured bags around areas that might be attractive to bears

If you encounter the bear remember to:
Give the bear lots of room to get away
MAKE NOISE- air horns, banging pots and pans together, slapping flat sides of 2x4s together, motion detector alarms (Rex the Barking Dog alarm- Amazon.com), soda can ½ full of pebbles or coins (coyote shaker)
Make yourself look bigger- raise arms, jacket above your head, stomp feet and yell.
